A Kid Like Jake Part 1 - A Kid Like Aziz Is Not Much DifferentThe last part of the Aisle Surprise Aziz Ansari episode was the climax of his hilarious story about a young boy and his tutor. He made a few changes, as well, but not enough to prevent the story from falling flat. You know, with a title like that, it's not that surprising, but is it a sequel to A Kid Like Jake?In this case, new teacher Alex is not interested in any lessons at all. He gets the boys into trouble that includes pretending to be in a war and letting their imagination run wild. When their antics get them into more trouble than they can handle, they are sent to the home of the tutor, a pervert who wants them to become gay. The whole situation seems to be confusing and absurd, but then Aziz attempts to be the class clown in order to amuse the students.Of course, the idea of playing games and clowning around on television doesn't appeal to his sense of humor and so he quickly turns to the internet to get in touch w ith the company of girls. One problem that arises is that he isn't allowed access to social networking sites and for a little while, he's even banned from using them. In the end, it's not surprising that he is not able to find a girl to date because none of the girls at his school want him.One thing that I enjoyed about Uncle Tom's Cabin was how Aziz threw in some comic relief to make the story better. At times, he made the story just plain silly and funny, and other times, he would make things serious but as lighthearted as possible. It's unfortunate that he wasn't able to write a sitcom like Seinfeld, but I suppose he had to try and fill in the gap with his story.In the end, the time surprise Aziz ended up with was actually just as bad as he thought. After discovering that the student he has taken under his wing was actually homosexual, he was forced to find out that he is also a pedophile. It's no surprise, as his own tutor tried to force him into a relationship that Aziz was not ready for. And it seems that the only way for him to find love and make a lasting impression is to join a service for gay men.However, instead of a great joke that showcases the class clown, we have an entire different series. This one has Aziz revealing his sexuality to the world and spending all of his time at school trying to find love. Even though it ends on a good note, I don't think that Uncle Tom's Cabin was worth the wait, especially when I saw A Kid Like Jake coming.And while I can appreciate a story about a man who is out of his league, I really don't care if it's for the right reasons or not. It's not like I'm a fan of Aziz Ansari either, so I couldn't watch this show without laughing. But there are a few problems that I had with this episode.One of the biggest problems with A Kid Like Jake is the fact that even though Aziz is not the most creative writer, the writers of the program seem to be trying to outsmart themselves as they make Aziz talk about his past and what h e went through to move forward with his life. Here, the writers have actually made it so that Aziz is trying to save face. It's almost like they wanted to leave us with more questions than answers with this one.

Am I Tone Deaf The Truth Behind the Misconception Suzy S. Do you think youre tone deaf and destined to be a bad singer for the rest of your life? Think again! Read on as voice teacher  Elaina R.  dispels the myth behind tone deafness Am I tone deaf? An alarming number of people ask themselves this question. But the truth is, tone deafness is a pretty rare phenomenon. Don’t give yourself up as a lost cause simply because you can’t carry a tune. Instead, learn what tone deafness is â€" and what common issues could be causing your pitch problems. What  Does  Tone Deaf Mean? For the tone deaf, hearing the pitch and processing it in the brain is impossible. Tone deaf people cannot distinguish between musical pitches because that is the way their brains work. There is even a medical term for this condition: amusia. According to scientists, congenital amusia (amusia not caused by brain injury) only affects 4% of people. So if you are having trouble singing in tune, it probably isn’t because you are tone deaf; its because you haven’t figured out the complex coordination between the brain, vocal cords, and breath that leads to pitch accuracy. In my years of teaching, I have met many students who have difficulty singing in tune, but not a single one of them was tone deaf! Are you still asking yourself, Am I tone deaf? Take this free tone deaf test from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to find out. Unfortunately there is no known cure for amusia (it’s just the way your brain is), so if you truly are tone deaf, singing probably isn’t the best choice for you. However, you can still enjoy playing a different instrument, such as drums. So, I’m Not Tone Deaf. Why Can’t I Match Pitch? Singing a pitch is a complicated coordination between the brain, the vocal cords, and the breath. First, the singer hears the pitch. Then, the singer must adjust their vocal cords so that they are just the right thickness to replicate the pitch. Finally, the singer uses their breath to make their vocal cords vibrate, producing the pitch. Failure on any one of these three fronts can make a singer sing out of tune. For most people, the second step getting the vocal cords to just the right position to sing a particular pitch is the hardest. Even people with perfect pitch sometimes sing out of tune for this very reason! The Many Faces of Pitch Problems I think of pitch-matching ability in stages. Some people start off at Stage 1, while others naturally start at Stage 4. Wherever you start, with the right kind of practice, you can progress through the stages until you make it to Stage 4. Stage 1: Usher I have no idea how to match pitch. I am always way, way off. With students like this, I usually start with simple free vocalization, having the student slide up and down their range and think about how they are making the changes that lead to the pitch going up or down. Then, I introduce pitch-matching exercises in a limited range, using an app like Pitch Analyzer to gauge accuracy. The more you practice matching pitch, the faster you will get better, so aim for five to 10  minutes per day. Stage 2: Stagehand I can match most pitches, but I sometimes sing off-key. Singers at Stage 2 still need to practice matching pitch every day. Unlike Stage 1 singers, though, you  can start stringing notes together, practicing matching three- or four-pitch sequences rather than single notes. You  should also practice large intervals of an octave or more (large intervals tend to be more disorienting). Stage 3: Background Singer I sometimes sing a little flat or sharp. Stage 3 singers have usually mastered the coordination between the brain and the vocal cords. For these singers, the problem is vocal technique. A singer who is often flat, for instance, may need to bolster their breath support or raise their facial resonators more. A singer who is often sharp may be using too much energy or air to fuel their sound. Stage 4: Diva Me, sing out of tune? Puh-lease! Whether by nature or nurture, Stage 4 singers are deadly accurate. Their brain, vocal cords, and singing technique work in tandem to produce spot-on pitches. The challenge for Stage 4 singers is to stay in tune during difficult moving passages or vocal extremes. Heres a recap: Am I Tone Deaf? No! If you are not one of the 4% of people who is truly tone deaf, you can learn to sing accurately. I have never had a student whose pitch accuracy has not improved with time. Just find a good singing instructor, practice every day, and slowly but surely, you will learn to sing in tune. Want to really improve your singing?   Truly owning your voice and making the most of your lessons requires more than just learning the lyrics and following your teachers direction. Read on for some great advice from Denver voice teacher Ruth C., and start approaching your singing from a whole new perspective Unlike other instruments, the voice is inside the body, which can make it a very frustrating instrument to understand! Scientists have done tons of studies to better understand how your two little vocal folds work when breath passes through them â€" but when you’re actually in the middle of your voice lesson, how can you understand what’s going on? The goal of lessons should always be to find your voice (not to mimic your favorite recording artist or your teacher).   The best possible way to make sure you understand what your teacher is having you do is to ask tons of questions.   It may feel silly to ask some basic questions, but I guarantee your teacher will love answering them! If it helps you to understand some of the anatomy/science of singing, ask for a full explanation from your teacher.   Teachers may use a variety of terms for the same idea (breath support, diaphragmatic breathing, etc.  â€" which all refer to the same thing), so make sure you and your teacher are on the same page.   Or if you work better with images (“singing with an even flow of air feels like ice skating”), make sure you and your teacher remember a few key ones to use in your lessons. Knowing the terms is one thing.   Feeling and being able to describe them as they happen in your body and voice is another.   Make sure you can identify how it feels to sing with good breath support. Does your rib cage expand?   Does your stomach expand or contract as you sing?   Do you run out of breath before the end of the phrase?   These are all questions to ask yourself and your teacher as you are working in your lesson. The practice of defining terms and seeing how they act in your voice will give you the best knowledge of all how to practice and sing successfully when your teacher isn’t there!   When you’re at home working on a song, can you feel the same flow of air, or relaxation in your jaw?   If not, then ask yourself how your teacher got you to find these qualities in your lesson.   (Having a recording of your lessons can help with this when your memory fails!) Learning to sing is not always easy, but practicing this kind of “Socratic Questioning” during your lessons will help you continue your improvement in between them.   When you have a better understanding of what really happened in those lessons, you can take that knowledge with you for the rest of your life! We have made some enormous strides in addressing the challenges which surround mental health. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 4 of us are affected by mental health, and as a society we’re starting to understand the ramifications of this. There are campaigns that are geared toward encouraging an open dialogue and preventing the rise in suicide rates. That said, it’s still difficult to argue against the fact that there remains a lot of stigma surrounding mental health issues. This is one reason many people find it difficult to broach the subject of their diagnoses, or how symptoms affect them. When it comes to deciding whether to inform employers, the possibility of prejudice or outright discrimination looms large. It can feel very much like a Catch-22. Inviting unnecessary scrutiny as a result of your mental illness is not an ideal working situation, but by not informing your employers of your situation, you may also be preventing them from providing you with useful resources. So, what are the best ways for an employee to approach this problem? Medication Discussions Medication can be something of a contentious issue to discuss. There are a lot of largely inaccurate and unhelpful stereotypes about how medication can affect its users. However, as some medications can have side effects, it may be necessary to address the issue with your employer. It’s important to note that if you are taking medication that causes side effects, you have protection against prejudicial treatment. In 2010 a Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruling found that side effects could be defined as an impairment under the Americans with Disabilities Act . This means as long as you can still perform essential tasks, your employer cannot discriminate against you. The legal issues aside, your best approach is an honest, practical discussion. Talk to them about the medication and the how the effects are likely to affect aspects of your job; particularly any safety issues. Approach the issue in a straightforward manner, come prepared with ideas for solutions and how your employer can help. Make it clear that your use of this medication is a responsible approach to a healthy lifestyle, a tool in helping keep you a mentally well, productive member of staff. Environmental Adjustments The environment you work in can have a huge effect on how well you function as an employee. With certain conditions â€" particularly generalized anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder â€" your surroundings can have a detrimental affect on your health. It is therefore in the best interest of both you and your employer to make appropriate provisions. A frank discussion about triggers is an important aspect of your approach. Aim to be calm and practical about informing your employer about which stimuli are likely to trigger your symptoms, and how they affect you. It could be an important aspect of your personal safety at work to ensure your employer knows how your PTSD or anxiety could affect your work. You don’t necessarily have to go into detail about root causes if you don’t feel comfortable, but by being clear about triggers, you are taking a responsible approach to your job. That said, symptoms of anxiety still aren’t always treated as seriously as they should. Offices are filled with stimuli which can prompt panic attacks. There are frequent performance pressures and the surroundings are often oppressive. If you don’t feel as though you can openly discuss anxiety with your employer, it may be worth considering a workflow improvement   approach. Efficient productivity solutions may also ease some of the pressures that trigger your anxiety. However, it is important to also take into consideration actions which will genuinely benefit your health in the long term. An Open Dialogue Many people find talking about mental health difficult. This makes the idea of keeping an open dialogue with your employer rather daunting. However, the fight against mental health stigma can really only be helped by keeping the discussion fluid and positive. Some people need to be shown that mental illness is not something to be feared. Others need to see that your symptoms don’t stop you being a functional, valuable staff member. Make a point to check in regularly with your line manager about your mental health. Be honest about difficulties you’re having, and how you can suggest approaching your work day accordingly. Beyond your own illness, take time to encourage keeping mental health discussion a part of the workplace life. You can get educational materials from organizations such as NAMI, and engage in specific campaigns. Not only can this help fight stigma in your workplace, but it may also help another co-worker with their own mental health issues. It is also not uncommon to find that staying vocal about what motivates you can prompt adjustments to the workplace. By the same token, talking about how a mentally healthy environment helps productivity may incentivize positive changes. Its also worth mentioning that investment in Employee Assistance Programs produces positive returns. It has taken a long time to shift the unhelpful stereotypes surrounding mental illness, and accept that it affects a great many of us. Yet, the issues of stigma and discrimination prevent many of us from talking about it with our employers. A practical, solution-oriented approach is often wise. For example, the letter “a” is pronounced as an “ah” or “aw” in Ireland. “How are you?” would sound like “Ha ware ya?”. The same happens with the “aye” sound, which becomes “oi”: Ireland being pronounced like Oireland.In terms of consonants, most of them are pronounced differently as to how they would be in the United States of America. The “t” in certain words is pronounced like a “ch” (tube is pronounced as choob, for example) and the “th” is pronounced like a “d” for words like “that” and a “t” for words like “think”.The letter “g” at the ends of words is almost never pronounced: Morning and walking become mornin’ and walkin’.Of course, this isn’t true for every region in Ireland as they each have their own local variant s on the language.
